Weeping may endure for a night, But joy comes in the morning. Psalms 30:5b
As I lie in bed this morning trying to get a few extra minutes of sleep before my alarm went off, I could hear the soft patter of the rain outside my window. As I listened wishing I could sleep the day away, I heard something else. I heard the birds singing. I’m sure I’ve heard the birds singing during the rain a million times before, but today the thought hit me, “We should be more like birds.”
How many times do we wallow in our troubles? We start to focus on the rain on our backs. We spend so much time dwelling on our problems that we forget how to sing, and we forget to trust the One who has promised to bring us through.
Philippians 4:8 says, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things.”
Never does He tell us to dwell on our problems. God tells us to think on the things that are praiseworthy. Trust me, I know when everything seems to be falling apart I have a really hard time thinking on anything else, but we will never see the victory if we don’t start thinking about the Victorious One.
We have to claim His victory in our lives as well. It starts with our thoughts, but our thoughts overflow into our mouths. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” We have to be careful what we are proclaiming.
There is a song by Casting Crowns titled “Praise You in This Storm”. This song portrays exactly the way I think so many of us feel when our feet are against the fire. We don’t understand what we’re going through. We don’t understand why God hasn’t taken it all away, but despite our finite knowledge, we have to keep praising Him. We have to keep worshiping Him because He is the One who will bring the breakthrough.
I pray today that if you are walking through something that seems to be impossible, that you give it all to a God. I pray that you will trust the One who can bring you through.
